Women fought for the right to wear pants. Men haven’t put in the effort yet for the right to wear skirts.

In the 00’s I started wearing nail polish. I wasn’t sure “why”, but I liked it, so f other people’s opinions.

People thought I was gay. I was bi, but gay guys didn’t find nail polish attractive either, so this was a constant refrain.

(Took me until 2020 to realize I was trans)

It wasn’t that long ago that women wearing pants was considered to be wrong. Wome used to be arrested in the US for wearing pants.

I had to fight my own father for the right to wear pants growing up. And you see people online today who still argue that women shouldn’t be “allowed” to wear pants.

It’s completely arbitrary how clothing got associated to gender over the course of history.

I remember numerous instances where skirts were seen as manly, iirc the scottish and the romans had that notion. I think pants as we have them today were only introduced around 1800? Because they are more difficult to manufacture and were developed mostly for blue-collar workers as protective clothing.

I wonder why femboys and transfems like wearing skirts now.

Is it because these skirts are inherently feminine, and thus it better matches the personality of the person? Or is it because society connects skirts to women, and want to be shoved into the “woman” category by wearing skirts?

I wear them partly because they help me express the (locally, socially constructed) femininity that I feel. I also wear them partly because I have serious trouble tucking, and a flowy skirt is less of a problem than tights. Which is a shame, because my legs look fine in tights.

Gender is almost unarguably entirely a social construct. Two seconds in a history book shows this to be true.

It’s a learned framework. But with in that framework we have associated sex with gender so intrinsically that separating the two is near impossible outside of a science context. At least in a modern context. This can vary depending on the region and point in history.

So with how linked they are you have skirts to female(gender) in that framework. If you want to identity as female (sex), then you will gravitate to the female gender(gender) clothing options. As a short hand. It’s not the only way but it is undeniable that it is one of the easiest.

It’s just working with the tools, behaviours and context of the reality around you

  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.

  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
