I’ve seen this so much lately. Now anything that resembles high effort must be AI because no way an artist could actually do that on their own. It’s the death of art in more ways than imagined.
Truly the worst part of AI is all of the accusations against real people and their work. Even comments on Lemmy and elsewhere being accused of being AI, often when it seems the user is autistic or a non-native speaker, at least to me. Artists being accused as well. Even outside of accusations, a lot of commissionable artists are providing timelapse of them making the art in whatever program.
People have been removed/kicked from contests/subreddits iirc, and that could also mean being graded unfairly, or judged unfairly in a number of ways that could impact them financially if others believe the accusations. I’m not going to make a call on which is worse, but I don’t think one is so obviously worse than the other.
Fair enough, though i gotta be honest “kicked from subreddits” sent me. We’re talking about people’s livilihoods here, not kicked from a social media community.
Sure but the original message essentially was “i think people(not specifically artists) have been removed from social media [over being accused of using ai”
It was a theoretical “iirc” and not a specific instance.
So in this theoretical instance of an artist being kicked from a community over being accused of using ai then surely the community leaders would be willing to watch a time lapse of them make art to confirm they are legitimate and remove the ban.
It would be inconvenient and annoying but it’s not likely to be the literal worst thing that comes from ai. Inb4 “what if the mods are unreasonable and don’t remove the ban!” Well, then the ai accusation is a red herring and that community would’ve already been under some pretty bad leadership and a ticking time bomb for any number of other reasons.
Gotta interact with your customer base somehow. For artists, it’d likely be the equivalent of getting banned off Ebay, Facebook marketplace, or Amazon.
Because as we see in this post, the artist could prove themselves. Other artists could time lapse themselves to show they are authentic. Im not saying no harm is being done, but artists could defend themselves.
When an ai steals an artists work and allows people to recreate art in their style, how would they defend themselves? If a voice actors voice is stolen and used for voice over videos without compensation or consent then how will they defend themselves? We’re talking about maybe being able to sue someone over it but you have less recourse and the damage is potentially greater.
And I’m also just thinking beyond artists alone. There can be automated highly targeted vishing attacks now which i think is a scary fucking thing.
Or take the Russian invasion of Ukraine where Russia has intentionally bombed civilian buildings to spread fear. Drones and UAVs are being guided by AI and if a country really wanted to, they could train them to target any sign of life, combatant or not.
So imo an artist being falsely accused of using ai it does suck, but they have options. I think having your work directly stolen is worse, and beyond just artists AI scares the living hell out of me. There’s a lot of reasons to hate or fear AI. Being falsely accused of AI isn’t the literal worst thing that has come from AI in the past 70 years.
Something happened when Photoshop came out and if written accounts are accurate the same when photography came out.
The only real difference is just how deep the misunderstanding and hate of the technology is.
In the past people didn’t like it because at the core people don’t like change.
But with AI it’s gone beyond that, it’s political and fueled by ignorance on top. Along with people blaming a tool, for the actions of people.
In the past people blamed the user, the human. Scamming, lying or selling fraudulent products. But now people blame the tool as if the tool it self sells the fraud, steals and claims innocence.
Lemmy is worse than most other places for this as well.
People with just enough tech knowledge to be angry, and artists who frankly are so tech illiterate that even using their own tools strains the limit of their understanding of the topic. Have been the source of more misinformation, misdirected rage and problems on this topic.
There are valid and plenty of reasons for artists to be upset but for every one that iv seen understand the tech, the actual problems around the topic and direct that anger at the correct sources.
I see 50 others directing it at the wrong place acting as an authority when they have no idea what they are talking about and then getting their followers to do the same.
Vtubers have been one of the absolute WORSE examples of this.
I mean, for me that does come from a place of appreciating real work. If this post would’ve been AI-generated, I would not have cared about it at all. But that they built the whole scene in Blender, that makes it cool.
There are also tons of people commenting under clearly AI generated pictures that they are „photoshopped“. Those are probably the same people that called videos with face filters photoshopped.

Idk. Being accused of using an AI is an inconvenience. Having your work stolen by AI seems magnitudes “worse”

Social media is how many artists gather a following that earns them a living.
Being kicked out of a large sub reddit can literally bankrupt artists. Depending on circumstances.
Social media IS the single most important avenue and marketplace for an indie artist to make a living.
It’s really really hard to over state how fucked over you can become just losing access to only a single large social.

Why? An artist’s livelihood hurt is an artist’s livelihood hurt; it doesn’t matter if AI capitalists or anti-AI witch hunters are the cause.

I will have to confess, I didn’t understood what you said. But I have to point out something:
We can cut the 4 last words of that sentence (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) /hj
Totally agree. A lot of people are adamantly hell-bent on finding if an image is AI or not. Stuck in Plato’s cave for real
