I do not for the life of me understand why people do this.
Shoes: go great with socks and cold weather
Thongs & sandles: go great without socks and warmer weather
The avantages of thongs/sandles is that they have airflow and are easy to get on & off, wearing socks with them both hampers airflow and also are fully exposed to getting wet or dirty.
Do you also wear a sweater over your bathers? A beanie over a sun visor? Breifs with your assless chaps?
They’re cooler than shoes but warmer than naked feet in thongs. Also, people might have gross stuff on their feet (e.g. warts, or those bad toenails that are apparently really hard to get rid of) that they’re not comfortable showing.
It stops the bottom of the sock getting dirty from the floor. Even a floor in a clean home will have small amounts if dust and/or pet hair, and walking around the house in socks makes dirty socks.
