My first smartphone was originally a Windows 8 phone but my dad put Cyanogen (the predecessor of Lineage aka degoogled Android) on it. Must have been something like 2012. The UI looked exactly like this.

Exactly. And if you examine your own behaviour in social interactions you’ll probably find that this applies to you as well. There’s a good chance you’ve made someone feel left out before when all you wanted was to avoid rejection or pestering them. It happens.
They might not show it to you because they don’t know you that well and/or think you might not care to see it. I trained my mind to jump to more positive interpretations in situations like that and more often than not they turn out to be correct.
